Looking your age or NOT!

I have always known I look younger than my age. Which I have always found so funny because when I was 13 I looked older and could get into nightclubs that had age restrictions of 21 and 23 years old. Ok yes I haven’t grown since then and don’t get me wrong I’m no midget. I’m 1.68m tall. So yes I was a tall 12 year old.

And so obviously with me looking so much older when I was young I never expected to look younger as I got older. But a lot of people have told me I look in my early twenties. Which is great until it comes to your job. I stand to be corrected not your job, but your reward from your job.

YOURE SALARY!

I recently have been researching a new job. And in having a discussion with one of my superiors I found out he was under the impression I was 24 years old. And it got me wondering am I paid by my age, as well as my race, sex, education and experience? Am I being short paid because I don’t look almost 31 years young.

I know overseas they do pay you according to your age and I’m wondering if people actually pay attention to a person’s age on their on their ID documentation when they paying them, as they do when they do their criminal checks.

Now this issue is called Ageism.

This is a form of discrimination. And last time I checked discrimination is against the constitutional law. And this happens to a lot of people both young and old and can even come across as bullying in the workplace. Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you’re too old to a certain job. And neither if you are young does it means you are not equipped to do the job either. Why should two people doing the same job get different salaries based on their ages? The only thing one should get paid more for is Education and experience.

Yes with age should come some respect? But how can I respect someone who is earning more than me because of their age and not because they actually deserve it. And the reality is that no one cares how old their work colleagues are. They only notice the amount of work one does or gets through. And if our salaries, increases, and bonuses are based on our performance as well as what we bring to the table. Age doesn’t always mean more experience or less.

Age is something we use to count how many years we have been on this planet. We have young and old souls out there for example, I know teenagers older in behaviour than some thirty year olds. These are seen as old souls. So should they be paid less because they are younger? I personally don’t think so. Do you?
