This last Thursday I went away for my first real break in about six years. Which is frightening in itself but I am a bit of a workaholic and to be honest finding the time to fit a holiday in these days is a bit difficult in my field of work. Also with our company using the policy of no work no pay makes it even harder, as it’s technically more expensive. But I managed to finally get away for about four days.
WHERE DID I GO?
I went to Umhlanga Rocks in KwaZulu Natal province. It was great we arrived at King Shaka airport and the temperature was higher than Johannesburg at 18:30. We hired a car and made our way to our hotel. Which I didn’t realise was right in front of Gateway shopping centre .
WHAT DID I GET UP TO?
Every morning I had breakfast right on the beach front with Umhlanga Rocks Lighthouse in the back ground. Having the sun beating down on my pale winter skin loving every moment of Vitamin D it can get as I sipped cappuccinos and watched the early birds on the beach finding their spots.
Then we made our way to the beach ourselves once our tummy’s were full and I bought a cool plastic spade which I must tell you they have upgraded. And I made sand castles and trenches, I searched for crabs and I tried to catch a tan. But due to the sardine run we sadly couldn’t swim because they had removed the nets. So I went shell hunting and I made some good discoveries.
We also hit the all the factory shops in Durban and I was a bit like a child in a candy store. So many choices, and at brilliant prices. I managed to buy myself a whole bunch of hoodies and shirts as well as board shorts. And I got nice little pressies for my family.
We also visited Ushaka marine world , which firstly is huge and secondly absolutely fantastic. If one has a family one should really consider going there. As while you do some shopping, have a bite to eat or explore the aquarium and all its fascinating sea creatures. They kids can go off and play in its Water world section. But what I loved most about Ushaka was two things. This giant ship and I say giant as its huge to me. Probably not in reality which has three places you can eat at and then the fact that you can still access the beach from there. And if you’re hungry there is a Moyo’s right on a pier. Which I can only imagine to be amazing for parties.
But all in all I think I had a great holiday. Thanks to the Gautrain who got me to the airport in 10 minutes from Sandton, Mango Airlines who got me to Durban and back, Tempest car hire for the car and most of all my best friend for coming with me and making it more amazing, than what Durban already is.
